Empty Bowls distributed $17,000 in 2009
to five community food distribution programs.
Funding guidelines can be reviewed at the bottom of the “Donations” page.
The bulk of the funds collected ($14,000) went to three Perth area organizations:
The Perth & District Food Bank
The YAK Youth Centre
Food For Thought School Breakfasts

The balance of funding went to two Perth related initiatives.
The first is a program founded by Perth resident and former
Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, James Bartleman.

Under the administration of Frontier College, the camps operate in 39
northern Ontario communities. They were born out of the despair and tragically
high suicide rates among aboriginal youth in the far north. The camps are not just about
teaching the joys of reading, says Bartleman, but about mental wellness.

In addition, Empty Bowls has donated $1,000 to Perth’s
Guatemala Stove Project in aid of the 35 pupils of
Escuela Los Niños de Sam

This school, located in the highlands of Guatemala, was built last spring in memory of
Sam Clarke, a 20 year-old student from Perth whose parents Tom Clarke and
Rita Redner founded the Stove Project. Sam had participated in building
stoves in Guatemala several times alongside other volunteers from Perth.
In 2008 he went off to study at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.
Tragically, he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.
Together with contributions from students at many schools across Lanark County,
Empty Bowls is helping to lay the foundation for an ongoing nutritional
program at Escuela Los Niños de Sam in his memory.
